Zorensky sale covers every angle
03 April 2004As the most prolific of the 18th century English porcelain-producing factories, there is plenty of scope when it comes to collecting Worcester porcelain. There are few collectors, however, who can match the determination of Jeanne and Milton Zorensky.
Hopes for a revival as Caroline takes back Little Chelsea
01 April 2004THE Little Chelsea Antiques Fair is back under the auspices of London ceramics dealer Carolyn Stoddart Scott, who founded it 25 years ago.
Christie's Sale of Poole Pottery Museum collection
01 April 2004The hangar saleroom at Christie’s South Kensington was full to overflowing for the much-publicised sale of the Poole Pottery Museum collection and archive on March 31.
In short, it’s a move for the better
01 April 2004MOVING shop when leases expire, or for other reasons, is always stressful, but some moves are less traumatic than others.
Commercial Road venture
01 April 2004A NEW Thursday antique and collectors market will open in mid-May at Spitalfields, Commercial Road, London E1, run by Sherman & Waterman who already have markets in Covent Garden and Portobello Road.
Man and Ape
01 April 2004Edward Tyson’s Orang-outang, sive homo sylvestris: Or, the anatomy of a pygmiecompared with that of a monkey, an ape, and a man... was the first work to demonstrate scientifically the structural relationships between man and anthropoid ape and one which had a powerful influence on subsequent thoughts on man’s place in nature – albeit the orang-outang on which his work was based was actually a young chimpanzee.
The cup that cheers... with Manchester engineers
31 March 2004YOU don’t see detailed architectural scenes that often on English porcelain. Such pieces are much more the preserve of Continental factories like Meissen, Sèvres or, most notably, Berlin. Their smooth, hard paste provides a better ground for the highly detailed, crisp painting these subjects demand. However, if topography is to be found on English porcelain, it is most likely be encountered on wares from the Derby factory which came nearest to emulating the Continental firms.
Luxembourg sells her stake
31 March 2004DANIELLA Luxembourg has launched her own private art dealership, Luxembourg Art, after selling her stake in auction house Phillips, de Pury and Luxembourg to partner Simon de Pury.
Another five-figure bid underlines Jane Vivian as a name to notice
23 March 2004The well-worn cliché about everyone in the trade wanting to buy the same few pictures was certainly in evidence at the March 9 sale of British and Continental pictures at Bonhams (17.5/10% buyer’s premium) at Knightsbridge when this highly commercial oil-on-canvas view of the Piazzatta, Venice, indistinctly signed Viviani, came under the hammer with a highly tempting estimate of £2000-3000.
London Asian fair cancelled
23 March 2004ORGANISERS Brian and Anna Haughton have cancelled this summer’s London Asian Art Fair citing trade uncertainties over The Dealing in Cultural Objects (Offences) Act as the reason.
Return of thief posing as wealthy buyer
23 March 2004POLICE are warning that a thief, fitting the description of a woman who stole from London antiques shops in January, has struck again.
Why 19th century wares are more sought after now
23 March 2004THE large number of increasingly wealthy mainland Chinese dealers and collectors participating in UK auctions are pushing up the prices in certain sectors of the market, including 19th century Chinese-taste ceramics. In the past this area has largely been overlooked in favour of imperial porcelain from earlier periods, but with the best 18th century mark and period routinely commanding six-figure sums, 19th century ceramics must look good value for money.
Turmoil years are Fine Art choice for a comeback
23 March 2004FOUNDED in 1876, The Fine Art Society at 148 New Bond Street is one of London’s oldest and most innovative galleries and it has chosen a fascinating theme for its next exhibition, which opens on March 23 when the gallery gets back to business after two months renovation.
Bonhams review auction charges: Premium changes shift burden off seller and on to buyer
23 March 2004From April 1 Bonhams will increase the buyer’s premium in their Knightsbridge rooms to bring it in line with that charged at Bond Street.
Looking for more niche specialists
23 March 2004LAST September, businessman and glass enthusiast Nicholas Lyne sold his stake in Berkshire auctioneers Law Fine Art to his partner and co-founder Mark Law and teamed up with Sussex ceramics dealer Brad Dover of Jupiter Antiques to launch the Kensington Ceramics & Glass Fair, the first of which was held at the Kensington Close Hotel on February 26 and 27.
Roses’ bloom has faded, but not blown over
23 March 2004FIFTEEN or so years ago works by the likes of Helen Allingham (1848-1926) and the Stannards of Bedfordshire had the sweet smell of success all over them. However, in more recent times the general consensus is that watercolours of this genre, which I loosely describe as “roses round the cottage door”, have slipped from favour.
The problem of identifying bonafide Boningtons…
23 March 2004Illustrated in colour on the catalogue cover of Clevedon Salerooms’ March 4 sale was a watercolour described as being by Richard Parkes Bonington (1801-1828).
The fall and rise of a tragic young man
23 March 2004ALTHOUGH Derwent Lees (1885-1931) is recorded in reference books, such as the Handbook of Modern British Painting and Print-making 1900-1990, published by Ashgate, he is not that well known outside specialist trade circles.
The mysterious case of the lost archive…
23 March 2004IT could have come straight out of one of the author’s own stories – a lost archive of unique material valued at two million pounds uncovered in the offices of a London law firm after being missing for decades.
Milton and Jeanne Zorensky collection sold
23 March 2004Bonham’s had no difficulty dispersing the first instalment of the mammoth collection of Worcester porcelain formed by Milton and Jeanne Zorensky, offered in their New Bond Street rooms on March 16. Just five of the 416 lots were left unsold and even these had all found buyers by the end of the day.
