Chinese Works of Art
This sector comprises art and antiques from China including works from the Han, Tang, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
There is a market for pieces of all ages and rarity from ancient Neolithic jades right up to ceramics made in the Republic era. The increased interest and purchasing power from Mainland China since the late 1990s has led to a significant rise of prices.
Chinese-taste wares still dominate, with quality and rarity overcoming any shortcomings over condition
22 June 2004PROFESSOR Edward T. Hall (1924-2001) was a born collector, amassing over a million cigarette cards as a schoolboy at Eton College and later building a celebrated collection of clocks and scientific instruments that was sold at Christie’s King Street last July.
Opinion divided over blue and white vase
22 June 2004AUCTIONS are often the best way of settling whether a work is genuine or not. Of the speculative entries in Christie’s South Kensington’s 584-lot sale on June 11, most were contested by Hong Kong and mainland Chinese dealers. Before the sale, trade and auction specialist opinion was divided as to whether this 10 1/2in (27cm) high blue and white vase (shown right) was a Yongzheng (1723-35) mark and period vessel or a 19th/20th century copy as catalogued.
Buffalo bill of £470,000
22 June 2004IF the Toguri collection’s £600,000 black and white baluster vase was a masterpiece of Cizhou art, the size, detail and ingenious use of the stone’s natural inclusions make this monumental black and grey water buffalo, offered in Sotheby’s Bond Street’s 127-lot mixed owner outing on June 9, a master class in jade carving.
Sleeper at Sotheby's June 10 sale
22 June 2004THIS wucai dragon jardinière, third right, entered together with three routine pieces of 17th and 18th century Chinese blue and white (pictured with it), with pre-sale hopes of £900-1300, proved a sleeper and was the focus of an intense bidding battle between Hong Kong, Taiwanese and mainland Chinese dealers at Sotheby’s Olympia’s 387-lot outing on June 10.
Jade collection adds international flavour to Wiltshire
15 June 2004AN 18-strong offering of Chinese jades at Woolley & Wallis' (17.5% buyer's premium) May 25-26 sale, including this pale green, reticulated vase and cover, right, had emerged from an old South-of-England collection consigned via a fine art agent in Chichester.
Going for a Song… at £600,000
15 June 2004Pictured right is the highlight of what turned out to be London’s Asia Week’s most successful auction.
Pen box stars as private collection lures Oriental specialists
09 June 2004THERE is nothing like a modestly estimated, old English collection of Chinese art to lure London’s specialist trade to the provinces.
Eastern rarities liven up routine pieces
09 June 2004SCATTERED amongst the colourfully decorated but fairly routine European-taste 18th century famille verte and famille rose bowls, plates and tea services that comprised the bulk of Christie’s King Street’s (19.5/12% buyer’s premium) 214-lot European collection of Chinese Export ceramics on May 11 was a handful of more unusual entries for which buyers paid a premium.
Without a doubt, jades are the stars
28 May 2004INEVITABLY fairs dominate June in London but there is also much activity in the galleries and showrooms with dealers taking advantage of the influx of serious collectors and trade into the capital.
Dealers lure June's fairgoers
28 May 2004MAYFAIR dealers in things tribal, unusual and exotic, the Gordon Reece Gallery, are currently holding one of their periodic selling exhibitions of antique Chinese furniture at 16 Clifford Street, W1.
Eye-catching Orientals are Sussex highlights
26 May 2004THE Orient provided the most eye-catching highlights at Rupert Toovey's (15% buyer's premium) March 17-19 sale, in the form of a set of four Japanese Satsuma plates signed by Kinkozan and an 18th century Chinese bamboo carving.
In Chinese, a surprise can be predictable...
12 May 2004THE Bonhams empire has embraced the notion of niche markets in pragmatic fashion, each of the various outposts having its own speciality – while the Scottish branch, which sells across the range of the market, breaks its sales into single specialist offerings. On March 18 Bonhams Edinburgh (17.5/10% buyer’s premium) offered 375 pieces of jewellery and silver with the following day’s sale comprising 198 items of Asian art, ceramics and glass.
Sheer quality helps scroll unroll bids from around the globe
11 May 2004THERE may be a long-established tradition of collecting Chinese ceramics and works of art in the West, but the highly specialist knowledge of the language and culture required to appreciate Chinese painting from anything more than a decorative point of view means most serious collectors and dealers are based in the Far East.
Far East bids up prices on Chinese lots
05 May 2004FOR many collectors, the finest quality 18th century Qing dynasty mark and period porcelain is the holy grail of Chinese ceramics, but connoisseurs have long revered the understated aesthetic and classic simplicity of the Song dynasty’s (960-1279AD) monochrome glazed ceramics.
Chinese photograph albums
05 May 2004TWO albums of 19th century Chinese photographs assembled by a British diplomat sold for £5200 in a general antiques sale held by Sworders at Stansted Mountfitchet, on March 30.
Hit US show for Mayfair
05 May 2004ONE of the most acclaimed exhibitions of the late March Asian Art Week in New York was London dealers’ Rossi & Rossi’s show Styles from the Steppes: Silk Costumes and Textiles from the Liao and Yuan Periods.
Quality overrides damage limitations of bids: But will intrusive TV cameras give vendors the wrong ideas?
28 April 2004FOUR house clearances of properties each valued at over £1m meant some long and frantic hours of valuing and cataloguing for Wellers (15% buyer's premium)auctioneer Tim Duggan – three heavy weeks rewarded when the March 13 sale day was one of the best ever at the Surrey rooms with 95 per cent of the 1200 lots getting away notching up a total of well over £100,000.
Is this the year to invest in the China Trade?
19 April 2004With the Chinese economy expanding at an unprecedented rate, and Chinese tourists becoming increasingly numerous in Europe, China Trade paintings are an area of the art market that might prove a cannier investment than most.
Why 19th century wares are more sought after now
23 March 2004THE large number of increasingly wealthy mainland Chinese dealers and collectors participating in UK auctions are pushing up the prices in certain sectors of the market, including 19th century Chinese-taste ceramics. In the past this area has largely been overlooked in favour of imperial porcelain from earlier periods, but with the best 18th century mark and period routinely commanding six-figure sums, 19th century ceramics must look good value for money.
Hungarian ceramics return home
23 March 2004Shown right are two highlights from the sale conducted by John Bellman (15% buyer’s premium) of Newpound, Wisborough Green, on February 18.
