Lyon & Turnbull
Edinburgh auction house Lyon & Turnbull has been operating since 1826 in Scotland. The company specialises in fine art, jewellery and antiques.
They hold about 30 auctions a year including dedicated sales such as Scottish paintings, European and British paintings, furniture, silver, books and furniture.
In 2000 the business formed a marketing alliance with US auctioneers Freeman's of Philadelphia.
Salerooms feel the tribe is right
15 January 2018The rising popularity of the tribal art collecting scene is tempting auction houses to take steps in that direction.
CSK poster girls make return to auction rooms in Edinburgh
02 January 2018Former Christie’s vintage poster specialists Nicolette Tomkinson and Sophie Churcher have teamed up with Lyon & Turnbull to launch dedicated auctions this year.
Long voyage ends in Edinburgh
06 November 2017Dated by the Edinburgh auctioneers to c.1815-17, a group of watercolours made on a voyage to the Middle and Far East was bid to a far higher than expected £13,000 in a 650-lot Lyon & Turnbull (25/20% buyer’s premium) sale of October 11.
Dresser leads low-down on post-1860 design sales scene
06 November 2017With sales of post-1860 design a seasonal fixture round the country, an argument could be made for Scottish auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull (25% buyer’s premium) having a geographical edge.
The elusive Gordon Maule
06 November 2017Figuring why a specific lot did unexpectedly well is part and parcel of reviewing auctions but this oil on board lunette of a pastoral idyll below is more of a challenge than most.
Book sale surprises spring up in the north and south
23 October 2017Sales held on consecutive days in Edinburgh and London produced two lots that ended up selling for far, far higher than expected sums.

04 September 2017So much more successful than their 18th century forebears, today’s Jacobites go from strength to strength.
Paolozzi Tube station mosaic study bought at auction by brewers of Paolozzi Lager
29 August 2017A study for Eduardo Paolozzi’s classic Tottenham Court Road Underground stations has ‘come home’ after being bought at auction. Not to London where the original mosaics by the pop art pioneer are located, but to the artist’s home city.
Frost is hot in a volatile climate
28 August 2017A raft of contemporary and post-war art featured in the busy August schedule in Scotland. Such art remains a picky and tempestuous market north of the border. The latest results were scattered with a mix of bullish and more subdued results.
Colourists hint at a bright future in London
28 August 2017Security shouldn’t be too much of a problem when opening a gallery space if one of your new neighbours is a former prime minister protected by armed guards. But aside from Tony Blair’s London residence down the road, Lyon & Turnbull had plenty of its own reasons for choosing Connaught Street, just north of Hyde Park, as the location for its new showroom.
Young Pretender’s disguise: Cloth fragment linked to Bonnie Prince Charlie exceeds expectations at Lyon & Turnbull
24 August 2017“Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep watch by your weary head.”
Pick of the Week: Breaking news of a Jacobite rarity
21 August 2017The highlight of Lyon & Turnbull’s sale of Scottish Silver & Applied Arts on August 16 was a Jacobite drinking glass with a difference.
Auction house of the rising sun
21 August 2017The British Museum’s big summer exhibition on Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai is over, but more art from the Land of the Rising Sun is in the offing (also see International Events, ATG No 2305).
Pop art pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi's study for London Tube station mosaic offered at Edinburgh auction
27 July 2017When London’s Tottenham Court Road Underground station started its £400m refurb, one of the trickiest tasks was not the tracks, the signals, ticket office or any of the usual suspects. Instead, it was tackling 950 square metres of mosaics designed by one of the most celebrated of 20th century British artists.
Feline good in a Scottish saleroom
24 July 2017August is traditionally the month when most of the auction world takes a breather. But in Scotland, where well-heeled holiday-makers tread, there is no let-up.
Rare Charles Rennie Mackintosh watercolour achieves top price at Lyon & Turnbull Scottish art auction

12 June 2017Sensational results for Scottish author in Lyon & Turnbull sale recall a doomed family link...
The £13m Asian art boon for London as Silk Road begins to run dry
05 June 2017“It was one of those eureka moments,” said Rosemary Scott, Chinese ceramics specialist at Christie’s. “My colleague Jeremy Morgan was on a perfectly normal valuation visit when he walked into the drawing room and there, on the mantelpiece, he saw these vases. He couldn’t believe his eyes.”
Auction trio reflects an overall buoyancy to the antiques market
22 May 2017Three substantial sales from Edinburgh to Exeter via Doncaster last month confirmed the promise of early spring with the staple areas of furniture, silver and ceramics holding up and, for named or specialist-interest material, doing well. The figures underline the overall buoyancy.
