Richard Winterton
Richard Winterton are an auction house based in Lichfield, Staffordshire. The present company was set up in 1997 but director and auctioneer Richard Winterton comes from a family with a background in auctioneering dating back to 1854.
Regular auctions are held at the Lichfield Salerooms with specialist sales including categories ranging from pictures, antiques, tribal art, toys and garden statuary to vintage textiles and collectable cameras.
When Pompey and Wolves knew better days...
13 February 2004Portsmouth are just hanging on in the Premiership at present, but they too have had their glory days, and in a December 10 sale held by Nesbits of neighbouring Southsea, this programme (right) for the last pre-war FA Cup Final of 1939, in which they beat Wolves 4-1, was sold for £400 (a ticket for that game made £135) and another for the 1934 final, in which they had been beaten 2-1 by Manchester City, was bid to £450.

Low estimates will stimulate major bidding
06 February 2004There is no doubt that a weak dollar has contributed to a weaker UK majolica market – and yet low estimates for good pieces continue to stimulate bidding.
Go-ahead for August proves good aesthetic judgment
10 September 2002MANY auctioneers decide against holding sales in August, traditionally the quietest month of the auction calender. These Staffordshire auctioneers, Richard Winterton chose to go ahead with their monthly sales which, as so often throughout the year, was led by brown furniture.
Davenports are out of favour – but Jerusalem adds the golden touch
14 June 2002William Blake did not manage to persuade his non-conformist followers to build Jerusalem in England’s green and pleasant land, but a Victorian carpenter came close with this davenport, right. Consigned to the May 22-23 sale held at Winterton’s (10% buyer’s premium) in Lichfield, the davenport belongs to an interesting group of 19th century olivewood furniture bearing the logo Jerusalem, written in English or Hebrew.
Double appeal sees ivory sell at £1400
04 April 2002The continued demand for Art Nouveau and the ageless appeal of the female nude provided a winning combination at the sale held by Richard Winterton (11% buyer’s premium) at Burton-on-Trent on March 13.
Ceramics lure buyers from NEC fair
14 February 2002THIS first sale of the new year at the Staffordshire rooms Richard Winterton attracted a number of new buyers who were all in the area for the LAPADA fair at the nearby Birmingham NEC.
Bids on tray and sticks boost silver revival hopes
11 January 2002COUNTRYWIDE hints that there may be some lift to the general silver market got a further boost at this Staffordshire sale on 28-29 November at Wintertons where one of the main sections comprised 13 silver lots, of which 90 per cent sold to both trade and private bidders with Christmas in mind.
Derbyshire debut pulls in bidders from across country
01 November 2001THE first sale by the Staffordshire-based auctioneers Wintertons to be held at Bakewell’s Agricultural Business Centre in neighbouring Derbyshire was a wide-ranging 639-lot event which attracted trade and private buyers from across the country and even some overseas interest in the telephone and on the book.
£3000 ‘fresh’ sofa table tops day in Staffordshire
26 September 2001Good stock furniture attracted bidders to the first of these Staffordshire August sales on 15 August at Richard Wintertons, the best being a George III mahogany sofa table.
Pair of Minton plaques
18 September 2001This pair of Minton plaques by pâte-sur-pâte master Louis Solon had been rescued by a Staffordshire man from his mother’s garage and transported by supermarket plastic bag to the Burton-on-Trent rooms of Richard Winterton.
Moorcroft in demand as furniture hits difficulties
17 September 2001THE two-day Staffordshire sale at Wintertons on 25-26 July was, at just under 800 lots, not perhaps quite a giant sale but it certainly covered the range of lower and middle-priced antiques.
Continental Imperialist weighs in with £4800
06 July 2001The Foot and Mouth crisis put an end to the intended group selling of Imperial weights and measures belonging to the British Trading Standards Association. The weights have now been sold over a number of general antiques sales at the Burton-on-Trent rooms of Richard Winterton (10% buyer’s premium) the latest of which was held on May 23.
Net sparks wide interest in ceramics
06 June 2001UK: THE Internet has, so far, hardly lived up to the initial claims made for it in the auctioneering world, but it does have its merits, as the Staffordshire firm Wintertons will attest.
Standards officials sell off Imperial evidence
23 April 2001With Sunderland greengrocers being prosecuted for selling bananas in pounds and ounces rather than grammes, the British Trading Standards Association is naturally keen to be rid of its vast stocks of Imperial weights.
