A lack of sufficient stellar consignments at the latest Contemporary art sales in London meant the overall total was down on last year.

Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia has acquired a Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-97) portrait of an Irish veteran of the French and Indian War. The foundation bought it at Sotheby’s Old Master day sale in London in December when it sold for £40,000 plus premium.

The latest Impressionist & Modern art auction series in London generated decent competition on a few key lots but the overall total was the lowest for a February series in this category since 2016.

Sotheby’s has reported a 16% jump in sales to $6.4bn (£4.8bn) for 2018 – a reward for its focus on growing online and private sales. Profit, or adjusted net income, improved by 5.9% to $128.9m.

Growth in the Modern and Impressionist art market outpaced that of post-war and contemporary art in 2018, according to the latest global auction data from Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips.
