Endangered Species
Regulations for the trade in endangered species are controlled by the United Nations’ Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES).
This covers items from ivory, rhino horn, tortoiseshell, taxidermy items and certain types of wood whether they comprise the whole or part of the object.
ATG letter: UK ivory trade ban will harm market world leader status
30 April 2018MADAM – We are all devastated at what is being proposed by the government in relation to ivory.
New York trade takes state’s ivory ban to court
23 April 2018A New York law banning the sale of antique ivory has been challenged in court by two leading US antiques dealers associations.
ATG letter: We need class action on ivory
23 April 2018MADAM – Thank you for printing my previous correspondence (ATG No 2337). If I thought that a ban on pre-1947 ivory would stop the death of 50 elephants I would stop writing.
ATG letter: No compensation after ivory ban comes into effect
23 April 2018MADAM – The government’s ill-conceived attack on antique ivory will likely mean that two pieces in my home – a 19th century Cantonese puzzle-ball chess set and my wife’s Corpus Christi acquired shortly after our marriage 50 years ago – now have no value in probate.
ATG letter: Potential consequences of the ivory ban – for museums
23 April 2018MADAM – Last year readers may recall a Victorian presentation ‘ivory tusk’ dinner gong was removed from display in one of the Royal Collection exhibitions.
ATG Letter: Collections 'are now worthless'
16 April 2018MADAM – As a dealer (and collector) in antique needlework tools and other small collectables, I am dismayed and angered by the proposals for the ivory ban as outlined in detail in last week’s ATG.
ATG Letter: Seven reasons the ivory ban is ‘flawed and ill-conceived’
16 April 2018MADAM – Having read the government (Defra) statement on the UK ivory ban (ATG No 2337), it is obvious that far from offering clarity, it is flawed on the following points:
ATG Letter: Send ATG to your local MP
16 April 2018MADAM – I would suggest sending a copy of last week’s ATG guide to the ivory ban to every MP with an appropriate covering letter.
No rolling 100-year date for ivory ban
16 April 2018BADA has clarified a key element of the government’s proposals for a near-complete ivory ban – the stipulation that all items qualifying for the ‘rarest and most important of its type’ and portrait miniature exemptions must be 100 years old.
ATG Letter: ‘Heading towards unworkable fudge’
16 April 2018MADAM – I am alarmed at the government’s apparently poor understanding of how the trade works and its relationship with collectors and venerable institutions.
The ivory ban: the antique objects that could not be traded under the new law
09 April 2018ATG selects objects with ivory – from teasets to Art Deco figures – recently sold at auction that may become illegal to sell under the law
ATG Letter: 'The ivory ban is about Michael Gove playing politics, not saving elephants'
09 April 2018MADAM – I concur with everything that Michael Baggott wrote in ATG No 2235.
De minimis exemption becomes the new battleground in antique ivory sales ban
09 April 2018The art and antiques trade is calling on the government to re-think its planned restrictions on the sale of antique items containing small amounts of elephant ivory.
The ivory ban: ATG answers reader questions about the new law's implications for antique ivory
09 April 2018Roland Arkell and Noelle McElhatton on what the new ivory law could mean for art and antiques.
COMMENT: Now's not the time for the trade to throw in the towel regarding the ivory ban
09 April 2018The general parameters of the government’s ivory ban, on the cards for years, are finally clear. As always with issues of CITES, the devil will be in the detail. Though the trade feels despondent in the face of the ban, a small concession on the currently very narrow 'de minimis' rule will make the ban a lot more manageable.
The ivory ban: proposed changes to the law at a glance
09 April 2018The new, as yet unnamed law will allow for narrow exemptions to the ban. These comprise:
ATG Letter: Why Defra's ‘de minimis’ provision for antique ivory is ‘extraordinarily impractical’
09 April 2018MADAM – Defra’s findings outlined in the post-consultation document include an extraordinarily impractical provision for the ‘de minimis’ exemption – requiring registration (with an as yet unspecified fee) of all objects with an ivory content below 10% created before 1947.
IVORY BAN – industry leaders react: “We will draw the government’s attention to the ban’s inconsistencies”
03 April 2018An idea that began life in 2015 with a Tory government manifesto pledge for a total ban on the UK trade in ivory has finally taken shape, though not as draconian as originally pitched and not yet set in legislative stone.
Ivory sales ban launched in UK by Environment Secretary Michael Gove
03 April 2018An ivory sales ban has been launched by the UK government including a number of exemptions for certain items containing ivory.
DEFRA spokesman says expect response to ivory consultation ‘shortly’
02 April 2018The Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is expected to publish a response to the ivory ban consultation this month.
