Ceramics
Ceramics are among the most frequently collected antiques. Items made from earthernware (pottery) or porcelain (hard or soft paste) can serve functional roles such as tablewares, serving implements, vases and jugs or as ornaments, especially figures.
They usually have some form of decoration, either painted or transfer-printed, that is covered in transparent or coloured glaze. Ceramics are often catalogued by the name of their manufacturer or factory such as Meissen, Worcester, Doulton, Wedgwood and Sèvres.
New face at Festival
19 May 2004MOST of us are familiar with the designs Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden and Keith Murray produced for Wedgwood, but how many have heard of Norman Makinson?
Rockingham pug is best of breed for collectors
19 May 2004KEYS (10% buyer's premium) of Aylsham maintain the format of mammoth offerings – 1556 lots offered over two days (April 20-21) in this case – and, although only 60 per cent of them got away, there was plenty of material for budget-conscious collectors of such favourites as Royal Doulton character jugs and figures as well as Beswick Beatrix Potter and animal models.
A toast to two Drunken Bricklayers
19 May 2004BIRMINGHAM auctioneers Biddle & Webb (15% buyer’s premium) have been holding regular decorative arts sales for some years now. Generally 20th century ceramics top the sales list and this was again the case at the April 16 sale when two 13in (33cm) examples of Drunken Bricklayer vases designed by Geoffrey Baxter for the Whitefriars pottery were major stars.
Sale of faience ware charger at Fieldings
19 May 2004RIGHT: the faience wares decorated by Louis Kramer for Burmantofts between 1887 and 1890 are among the most coveted productions of the Yorkshire factory. So there was lots of interest among academics, collectors and dealers prior to the May 8 sale at Fieldings of Stourbridge in this fully signed 18in (46cm) diameter charger.
PREVIEW
11 May 2004THIS fine Nantgarw porcelain plate, right, once thought to be painted by Thomas Baxter and traditionally known as the ‘Three Graces’, is part of a collection of porcelain to be offered by Worcestershire auctioneers Philip Serrell on May 20.
Small wonders… Collections are key to fine sale success as turnover doubles at general events
11 May 2004AS USUAL at the March 18-19 sale held by Neales (15% buyer's premium), the spring event was led in price terms by furniture – but in terms of selling rates and the degree of competition in the room, the Nottingham event was more notable for the smalls and collectables.
The upper glass – and big-wheel potters
05 May 2004FOR some years now the country’s top glass fixture, the next bi-annual National Glass Collectors Fair will be held at the Heritage Motor Centre, near Gaydon in Warwickshire this Sunday, May 9.
Sorting out ceramics – by piece or pattern ... Of course there is always the hope that a visitor to the show might be able recognise and match a sherd to a complete item in their own possession.
05 May 2004KENSINGTON Church Street will be a worthwhile call for those interested in brushing up their ceramics scholarship over the next week or so, with two specialist dealers holding non-selling exhibitions aimed at furthering our knowledge.
Baldwin, Stinton & Davis
05 May 2004CHARLES Baldwin’s stock-in-trade as a porcelain artist was swans in flight, but the celebrated Royal Worcester painter did occasionally apply his meticulous technique to other subjects including mammals and other birds. The sale held by Philip Laney (10% buyer’s premium) at the Malvern Auction Centre on April 6 included the impressive vase, top right, decorated by Baldwin with goldfinches.
International interest wakens local pride – but at a price
05 May 2004ANOTHER giant two-day sale on March 25-26 put together by David Lay (15% buyer's premium) saw the familiar rapid selling of two and three-figure lots, the cheaper ones mainly accounting for the unsolds, peppered with lots of more quality and wider interest.
The character of London’s streets in Vyses’ vases
28 April 2004Charles & Nell Vyse by Terence Cartlidge, published by Richard Dennis. ISBN 0903685949. £15hb AS reported, US input has seen price rises for Charles Vyse productions, and they are now highly coveted.
A steady start for furniture standards
28 April 2004THE March 5 sale at Dee Atkinson & Harrison's (10% buyer's premium) West Yorkshire saleroom was the first antiques offering of the year and, after an 83 per cent selling rate on nearly 700 lots, the auctioneers took encouragement from the way the market seemed to be picking up, with furniture, at last, edging out of the doldrums.
A date at the chateau… Fair Preview
28 April 2004SPECIALIST ceramics dealers will, once again, be gathering at the historic chateau at Enghien, 20 miles south west of Brussels, this week for the fourth staging of the Salon Céramique Ancienne (Oude Keramiek).
£12,000 – the cost of failing in due diligence
27 April 2004THE importance of exercising due diligence has been driven home in the most painful way for a dealer, whose oversight has cost them £12,000.
Factors that made an Ugly Woman so attractive
19 April 2004THE importance of colour to collectors of saltglaze ceramics was emphasised at BBR's (10% buyer's premium) March 7 500-lot specialist sale near Barnsley when the orangey-brown hue and unusual subject matter made an Ugly Woman saltglazed inkwell one of the most desirable entries.
Ditching reserves helps Beswick mount up an even bigger success
15 April 2004IS there currently a more buoyant sector of the ceramics market than Beswick animals? Malcolm's No. 1 Auctioneers (12.5% buyer's premium) March 29 sale, held at Trustees Hall, Boston Spa, attracted what Malcolm Dowson estimated to be his largest ever attendance in over 20 years of auctioneering. The primary reason? A private collection of Beswick horse figures entered without reserve by a local resident who has decided to live in Spain.
The Death of Munrow sold at Sotheby's New York
15 April 2004The Death of Munrow, depicting the attack by a tiger on a certain Mr Munroe in 1793 when he was out on a hunting party on Saugar Island in West Bengal, is one of the most dramatic and celebrated subjects to be recorded in Staffordshire earthenware. As a result it usually commands a high price when it comes up for sale at auction but few could have predicted the $130,000 (£74,285) (plus buyer’s premium) realised for the example that appeared at Sotheby’s New York last week.
Clock and ceramics stand out on day of routine furniture
15 April 2004WITH sales of standard furniture chugging along – but at least finding buyers – Gildings (12.5% buyer's premium) of Market Harborough, in common with many in the provinces, looked to ceramics and clocks to provide the day’s highlights at their March 16 sale.
Supporters pool resources to help borough clean up
10 April 2004From the standpoint of manufacturing history, dispersals of any factory collection are always tinged with sadness.
Record books struggle to keep pace with Troika price rises
10 April 2004NOT all the market resides in a state of stagnation.
