A small panel painting previously sold two years ago at Christie’s as ‘circle of Rembrandt’ made more than 12 times that level when it reappeared at Sotheby’s with a full attribution.

A self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69) was knocked down for £12.6m at Sotheby’s latest live-streamed cross-category evening sale in London.

A self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69) – one of just three in private hands – is coming to auction at Sotheby’s next month.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has been revealed as the buyer of the small Rembrandt oil painting that led Sotheby’s Old Master evening sale in London at the end of last year after it went on view at the museum in the United Arab Emirates.

The fingerprints of Old Master artist Rembrandt van Rijn have been discovered on a 17th century oil sketch by auction house Sotheby’s.

Christie’s latest evening sale of Old Masters in London generated a premium inclusive total of £31.2m with records posted for painting by Gerard David (c.1460-1523) and a print by Rembrandt (1606-69).

When art dealer Jan Six viewed a portrait at Christie’s catalogued as ‘circle of Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669)’ in 2016, he was convinced it was by the hand of the master. Two years on, it has now gone on view in Amsterdam with its attribution fully confirmed by scholars.

A Rembrandt portrait sold in a £35m private sale negotiated by Sotheby’s will be staying in the UK after the overseas buyer withdrew their application to export the painting.

This painting, found by John Nye of Bloomfield, New Jersey saleroom Nye & Company Auctions leaning up against a cellar wall, became one of the sleepers of the year on September 22.

The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles has purchased the self-portrait by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-69) which is now known as Rembrandt Laughing.
