Photographs
Photographs have existed in various forms from the daguerreotypes of the early 19th century right through to today’s development of digital technology.
London dealers P & D Colnaghi have been selling photographs since the 1850s while the first photographic auctions took place in London in the mid-19th century, and though slower to take hold in the US, Alfred Stieglitz established important photographic galleries in New York during the first half of the 20th century.
Some of the most collectable photographers include Julia Margaret Cameron, Ansel Adams, Cindy Sherman, and Irving Penn.
Ansel Adams photographs offered at Doyle New York
20 November 2017Highlighting the next photographs auction at Doyle, New York, on December 14 is an Ansel Adams Museum Set comprising 75 gelatin silver prints of the most famous images, each with a pencil signature, from the legendary photographer.
Flash sales: Paris Photo joined by photograph auctions in France
17 November 2017Le Mois de la Photo in Paris celebrated the art of photography with the city’s annual fair Paris Photo at the Grand Palais from November 9-12 plus a slew of accompanying photograph auctions.
Highlights focus from auctions timed to coincide with Paris Photo
30 October 2017Paris Photo also serves as an opportunity for Paris auction houses to mount their own photo fest. Sales taking place during early November to coincide with the event at the Grand Palais include dedicated auctions at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and various firms at Drouot. Like the fair itself, the material on offer will range from contemporary works by living photographers through to pieces by some of the earliest pioneers.
