TEFAF
TEFAF stands for ‘The European Fine Art Fair’. It is an organisation that runs some of the world’s leading art and antiques fairs: TEFAF Maastricht, which takes place annually in March, and TEFAF New York which takes place twice a year in the autumn and spring.
The former event takes place at the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre (MECC) in The Netherlands. The fair began life in 1975 as the bi-annual Pictura Fine Art Fair with 28 dealers specialising in Old Master paintings and medieval sculptures.
It has since expanded with exhibitors numbers increasing ten-fold and has become widely recognised as a leading art and antiques fair, attracting major collectors, both private and institutional, from around the world.
TEFAF Maastricht in numbers
02 April 2012TEFAF report heralds dominance of China... but the caveats remain
26 March 2012So what is the most important revelation in this year’s TEFAF report?
Big ticket sales for UK dealers at TEFAF
19 March 2012THE incomparable TEFAF Maastricht opened to the usual streams of visitors at the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre but, unusually for the Dutch fair, an early big ticket sale came for a British picture.
The view of Haarlem from TEFAF Maastricht
28 March 2011DESPITE the ever-increasing international attendance and breadth of disciplines at the fair, Dutch Old Masters still remain at the very core of TEFAF Maastricht.
No more gloom for Maastricht as the power returns
15 March 2010IF the mood at the opening of the TEFAF Maastricht fair on March 11 was tempered with a note of caution, this was dramatically heightened after a power cut plunged the halls into complete darkness just as the vernissage was getting underway.
TEFAF sketch out new plan as London draws the crowds
20 July 2009THE organisers of the TEFAF Maastricht fair are inviting dealers to apply for stands in a new specialist works-on-paper section at next year’s event.
Dealers enjoy a masterful Maastricht
30 March 2009ST James's gallery Dickinson had one of the most impressive selections of paintings at TEFAF Maastricht and, like many other dealers in Old and Modern Masters, enjoyed a good fair.
Quiet confidence for Maastricht opening night
16 March 2009The opening night of TEFAF Maastricht (March 13-22) was as impressive as ever: if anything the quality was better than at recent stagings, there was no sign that people were staying away, while exhibitors in the traditional sectors were quietly optimistic that business could be done.
Readying their stand for TEFAF Maastricht
09 March 2009THIS year's 22nd staging of TEFAF Maastricht, which starts on March 12 with a day-long vernissage, will be scrutinised more than any other for signs of how the international art market is coping with global recession.
TEFAF study values global art market at £40bn
23 February 2009THE global art market grew by 11 per cent to £40.1bn over the last year, according to the survey just published by The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF). The report, prepared by leading art economist Dr Clare McAndrew, is the latest in a series of major studies commissioned by TEFAF that act as a focus for the launch of their annual Maastricht fair – the world’s top such event.
Maastricht to introduce contemporary design
06 November 2008NEXT year's 22nd TEFAF Maastricht will see a record 240 exhibitors from 15 countries (this year there were 227) and for the first time there will be a dedicated section for 20th century and contemporary design.
New blood benefits the Maastricht showcase
02 April 2008Everyone knows about the legendary TEFAF waiting list. The pre-eminence of Maastricht among international art fairs means spaces at the town’s congress and exhibition centre in March are as rare as hens’ teeth.
Early success at Maastricht fair
17 March 2008WITH their much-publicised US$30m Van Gogh, London and New York art dealers Dickinson had one of the most talked-about works at TEFAF Maastricht which closed on Sunday, March 16.
New TEFAF study highlights Chinese phenomenon and threat to European market
14 January 2008THE size of the world art market all but doubled between 2002 and 2006, according to the latest survey commissioned by The European Fine Art Federation.
Chinese buyer snaps up TEFAF’S $12m tapir
19 March 2007One of the highlights of this year’s TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) in Maastricht was this delightful Chinese Warring States bronze wine pourer formed as a tapir on the stand of St James’s, London Oriental specialists Littleton and Hennessy.
Noortman’s death forces Sotheby’s to rethink strategy for business
22 January 2007THE untimely death on January 16 of Robert Noortman, the charismatic Dutch picture dealer who co-founded of the TEFAF Maastricht art fair, inevitably raises questions about the controversial relationship between Noortman Master Paintings and its owners Sotheby’s.
Noortman dies of heart attack
16 January 2007ROBERT Noortman, the high-profile Maastricht picture dealer and one of the founding fathers of the TEFAF Maastricht fair, has died of a heart attack, aged 60.See next week's ATG for a full report.
Dave Aronson dies
15 January 2007WE regret to announce the death on January 5 of long-time exhibitor and chairman of TEFAF Maastricht Dave Aronson. He was 60.
TEFAF report reveals the economic phenomenon of the Maastricht effect
18 December 2006HOTELS, restaurants, insurance, security, shippers and packers, design and print, marketing and promotion. These are just some of the ancillary industries that benefit when the show comes to town.
Sotheby’s and Christie’s sign up for TEFAF Maastricht
06 November 2006WHEN TEFAF Maastricht opens its doors next March, something will be different. An extraordinary sequence of events means that for the first time, the world’s two biggest auctioneers will effectively stand as exhibitors at the world’s most important fair for specialist dealers in fine art and antiques.
