Antiques fairs and markets offer a great way to browse and buy.
With so many exhibitors or stallholders in one place you can view a lot of different items quickly and compare prices and quality.
Depending on the event, the first day or morning may be for reserved for trade buyers before the general public gain access.
Some antiques markets are held weekly whereas some fairs may be quarterly, biannual, once a year or have some other frequency. Check the Calendar section of this website for details or view the listings every week in the Antiques Trade Gazette newspaper.
Bernheimer to launch biennale in Munich
12 September 2001TOP German dealer Konrad Bernheimer, who has galleries in Munich and London, is the driving force behind a new international, prestige fair at the Haus der Kunst, Munich scheduled for a 2003 launch.
Another show in New York ups the stakes for top fairs
03 September 2001ANOTHER New York City fair will be inaugurated this autumn when The Connoisseur’s Antiques Fair is launched by veteran New York organiser Sanford Smith at the 69th Regiment Armory, Lexington Avenue and 26th Street, from November 16 to 19.
Single owner collection to launch rooms at Olympia
31 August 2001SOTHEBY’S launch their new saleroom at Olympia in West London on September 18 with the auction of the Ian Grant Collection, removed from 41 Ladbroke Square.
Sotheby’s reposition Billingshurst as supplier to Olympia
20 August 2001UK: SOTHEBY’S have announced their intention to reorganise their Summers Place, Billingshurst, West Sussex operation to “take advantage of the new Olympia saleroom”. The restructure involves ending all general sales at the end of November and specialising in garden statuary, in which the rooms have established a leading reputation, and modern and vintage sporting guns and rifles.

20 August 2001After 15 years of holding picture sales at Billingshurst, Sotheby’s (20/15/10% buyer’s premium) will, from December this year, be holding all their mid-range art auctions in their new saleroom at Olympia.

14 August 2001NOWADAYS Antiques For Everyone seems to be antiques for everywhere, which proves that a successful formula will travel. At the beginning of July Fran Foster of Birmingham’s Centre Exhibitions, the organiser who pioneered that formula, for the first time took her fair to Manchester; then from August 2 to 5 she was back at her Birmingham base for the summer version of the thrice-yearly Antiques For Everyone at the NEC.

09 July 2001AFTER Grosvenor House, a number of leading dealers’ next major fair is at Basel – Cultura, which will be held from October 13 to 21 at Hall 3 of Messe Basel where some 85 exhibitors from Europe and the US will stand.
New fair planned for Madison Square Garden

28 June 2001UK: THE quarterly London Coin Fair, affectionately known just as the ‘Cumberland’ on account of its venue, that was held last Saturday (June 23) was the last to be held at the Marble Arch Cumberland Hotel, it has just been announced.

16 June 2001Newlyn makes its mark as fine art sales move from Billingshurst to Olympia UK: SOMETHING of a landmark, this year’s annual Garden Picture sale at Sotheby’s South (15/10 per cent buyer’s premium) held on May 23 was the last fine picture sale to be held at Summers Place before operations move to Olympia in September. The Sussex rooms will continue to hold monthly general picture sales and quarterly print sales.

12 June 2001THIS year’s Summer Fine Art and Antiques Fair opened at Olympia last Thursday with the 400 or so exhibitors in a very subdued mood. However, by the end of the first day much serious business had been achieved.
Sotheby’s unveil Olympia plans
11 June 2001SOTHEBY’S have announced that they will hold their first sale at their new Olympia salerooms on September 18. The dispersal of the single owner collection will mark the beginning of an annual programme of 80-85 sales aimed largely at the middle market in terms of value.

Wartski continue their tradition of fine summer displays
04 June 2001The loan exhibitions held by London jewellery dealers Wartski have become something of an event in the summer calendar. They focus on specific areas of the jeweller’s art and previously the spotlight has been turned on such subjects as the tiara in 1997, and two years ago an impressive show dedicated to the work of the Parisian firm Falize Frères.
