Letters to the Editor
ATG letter: Ivory Act – government should listen to the true experts
12 June 2023I despair of this government. After banning antique ivory sales we now will see the disappearance of what I consider works of art from sailors long ago passing the time by carving on animal tusks (ATG No 2595).
ATG Letter: Claims of money laundering and terrorism funding just don’t add up
29 May 2023The latest transnational operation to tackle cultural property crime raises serious concerns once again about claims from Europol and Interpol.
ATG Letter: Government should reconsider ill-thought-out ivory rules
29 May 2023This week we have heard that the government plans to ‘extend the Ivory ban’. It has been reported in the press, on the radio and on television.
ATG letter: Jewellery dealer's memories of brushes with royalty
01 May 2023In this coronation week, I thought I would share some moments when my path working in the jewellery trade has crossed with that of members of the royal family, including our new king and the late queen.
ATG LETTER: Post-Brexit bureaucracy means London has lost out
24 April 2023Brexit has done it again!
ATG LETTER: ‘Wood engraving’ doesn’t cut it
24 April 2023I’ve always understood that Gwen Raverat (1885-1957) produced woodcuts, not wood engravings, and The Knight of the Burning Pestle, 1909, (ATG No 2587) is certainly a woodcut
ATG LETTER: Peter’s coat of many colours
24 April 2023I was wondering if anyone could help answer a question that has arisen with some research
ATG LETTER: Dollar dilemma when it comes to deliveries
24 April 2023Further to the issue raised in ATG No 2589 regarding problems importing items
ATG letter: Lesson from ‘old fossils of the stamps world’ for the ‘young tigers of the fossil world’
20 March 2023I was intrigued to read about the forthcoming sale of TRX-293 Trinity, the first complete Tyrannosaurus Rex to be offered in Europe, estimated at c.£4.45m-7.1m (News Digest, ATG No 2584).
Reflections on the beach
20 March 2023Can any of your readers identify the painter of this picture, an oil on wood panel French beach scene, please?
ATG letter: Reflections on your busy pages…
20 March 2023How sad to read of the passing of Hugo Morley-Fletcher. No, I didn’t know him, but he was one of my favourites on the Antiques Roadshow.
ATG letter: Fond memories of a porcelain expert and true connoisseur
20 March 2023I read with sadness Hugo Morley-Fletcher’s obituary in the ATG No 2583 by Roger McIlroy, who accurately summed up his personality.
ATG letter: Adventurer or artist maybe
06 March 2023I have recently acquired this portrait miniature measuring 4 x 2½in (10 x 6.5cm) and I would be very interested to know if any of your readers can throw light on the identity of the sitter.
ATG letter: Broken and stripped antiques are the result of the flawed Ivory Act
06 March 2023When the 2018 Ivory Act was being debated key campaigners (Born Free, many MPs including Angela Rayner and numerous celebrity supporters -notably Stephen Fry and Deborah Meaden) argued that the Act would IN NO WAY cause the destruction of antiques.
ATG letter: Artist’s Resale Right is harming the secondary market at lower levels
27 February 2023The majority of art dealers in the secondary market probably agree with Jeremy Taylor’s views on the Artist’s Resale Right (Letters, ATG No 2579) and had hoped that the Ivor Braka case (News, ATG No 2581) would be the start of a conversation.
ATG letter: Artist GH Warr refused to go to war
20 February 2023Regarding Christopher Selkirk’s letter in ATG No 2580 enquiring about a painting by GH Warr, I have no idea who the sitter is but readers might be interested in new information on the artist.
ATG letter: Is this a schoolboy cricket prodigy?
13 February 2023I wonder if any of your readers might be able to identify the sitter in this painting.
ATG letter: Send us your memories of Jimi Hendrix for our exhibition
13 February 2023Handel & Hendrix in London cares for and presents to the public the homes of two of the greatest musicians ever to have lived in London.
ATG letter: Artist’s Resale Right has already done the damage
06 February 2023Your article in ATG No 2576 speculates that London and the UK might lose their prominence if the major antiques fairs close down.
ATG letter: Fond memory of Lincoln jewellery dealer Eric A Bird
09 January 2023I would like to express my sadness on the closing of Eric A Bird Jewellers of Lincoln (Fairs, Markets, Shops & Centres, ATG No 2574).
