London
Has ‘Baghdad Bounce’ helped sales to the crest of a mini wave?
30 May 2003JUNE is very much the traditional month for London’s high season in the art market. However, in the middle of May we had a taster of the frenzied auction activity usually associated with that month, a mini tsunami of high-flying sales with a clutch of dramatic and record-breaking prices.
Souk up the atmosphere at Bazaar
30 May 2003The Fulham end of the Kings Road in London is already a mecca for decorators with incumbents like Guinevere, Mora & Upham and Fergus Cochrane. They have now been joined by Bazaar Trading Co. at 568 King’s Road, SW6 who say they are offering something rather different.
Enticing mix, with tribal art thrown in
30 May 2003SELDOM do niche fairs catch on so quickly as the splendid Hali Antique Carpet and Textile Art Fair, the sixth of which which will be held in its new location of Level One of Olympia 2 from June 5 to 8.
Relief for Ladysmiths
30 May 2003Many Antiques Trade Gazette readers will be familiar with the name Francis Raeymaekers of ADC Heritage from his days as a dealer in antique silver. After a sojourn in New York, he is back in London with a new venture.
They sell sea shells...
30 May 2003OLYMPIA’s Fine Art and Antiques Fair has plenty to interest the decorators but they are guaranteed something eye-catching at the stand of Notting Hill dealers Jay Arenski and Peter Petrou, who have made the unusual and decorative their forte. In recent years the pair caused a stir with a bejewelled mummy case (complete with incumbent) and sold out their stand full of Black Forest furniture, which now graces ski lodges from Aspen to Gstaad.
Contemporary art in da house
30 May 2003SHOWHOUSES in new housing developments are often a depressing, formulaic affair but this is not the case at the best designed showhouse in town at 20 Aubrey Square, a new residential development of 20 town houses at Campden Hill, Kensington, London W8.
£500,000 daguerreotype sets new record for photograph
29 May 2003London’s main photograph auctions took place last week. The high point of the series came at Christie’s on May 20 in a single-owner evening auction of daguerreotypes by the French photographer Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, when this image of the Temple of Olympian Zeus on the Acropolis sold for £500,000, reckoned by the auctioneers to be a new auction high for a photograph.
Alert after robber strikes in Chelsea
28 May 2003LONDON: POLICE are hunting a robber who escaped with two bronzes from a Chelsea shop after a violent struggle with the dealer. The robber, who struck at the Chelminski Gallery in the King’s Road on Wednesday, May 14, is thought to be the same man who has attempted a number of similar raids at shops in the area over the past two years.
Bond Street Silver Galleries to close
27 May 2003Downturn in trade blamed: The Bond Street Silver Galleries, a fixture on London’s finest antiques thoroughfare for 40 years, is to close in the autumn. The downturn in the trade for table and decorative antique silver is behind the imminent closure of the 18 strongrooms, more than half of which have been vacated in the last six months.
Contemporary influence grows stronger by the year
21 May 2003JUNE looms and the annual antiques season is due to get underway. Fairs are at the hub of proceedings and while Grosvenor House initiated this summer celebration of collecting and connoisseurship back in the 1930s, the latest addition to the June roster, artLONDON, has made its mark in a remarkably short time.
Promise of a good mix
21 May 2003AS announced earlier this year, Beckenham’s own Brian Simons and Philip Thompson, who trade as DECOFAIRS, relaunch their London Art Deco Fair at the Chelsea Village Hotel, London SW6, on Sunday June 8.
Marlene on the wall - for £75,000
20 May 2003IT IS a well-known feature of rock and pop memorabilia auctions, that material relating to the Beatles is easier to sell than that relating to other stars. On this basis, the key to assembling a sale of this genre is presumably to fill it with as much Fab Four memorabilia as possible.
May Avenue charger does it for Clarice Cliff
20 May 2003THE auction record for Clarice Cliff was sent tumbling last week on May 14 when Christie’s South Kensington sold this May Avenue charger for £34,000, almost double the previous high of £18,000 paid in December 2001 at Phillips for a charger decorated with the Windmill pattern.
Charles II silver Crown sets new auction record at £120,000
20 May 2003A CHARLES II pattern crown from 1663, the Petition Crown(*), has set a new world record for English silver coins at auction.
Bandana on the run…
20 May 2003A 71-lot sale devoted entirely to rock memorabilia relating to Jimi Hendrix took place on May 15 at Cooper Owen’s (15% buyer’s premium) Auction Gallery in Denmark Street, the bulk of the material coming from the collection of Bob and Kathy Levine who were part of Hendrix’s US management team.
Grosvenor House fair moves further into the 20th century... George Carter to give venerable event new look
14 May 2003OUR flagship fair and one of the world’s most prestigious antiques events, the Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair remains as traditional as strawberries and cream at Wimbledon and Pimms at Henley, but no one can say the most venerable of antiques events has failed to move with fashion.
Where it all started
14 May 2003The first, the finest, the rarest – and with an unbeatable provenance. It is not often that an auctioneer can boast this dream recipe for a lot, but Spink offer this heady mix of ingredients when they open their two-part sale of the Slaney collection on Thursday (May 15).
New gallery brings a stronger Oriental presence to London
14 May 2003VERY much a rising star on the international Oriental arts scene, London specialist Ben Janssens moves into the West End next month with the opening of his own gallery right in the heart of the capital’s art dealing district.
Auto developments
13 May 2003COYS, the Kensington-based auctioneers of veteran, vintage and classic cars, have formed a new collectors department around two former members of the Bonhams team.
It’s business as usual
13 May 2003FOR more than one reason, one might have expected the latest series of Islamic works of art sales in London to be a downbeat affair. Added to the prevailing economic gloom, this could surely be a sector of the market where the war in Iraq and its aftermath would have a depressive effect on prices.
