McLay’s at Gray’s – the latest in fashions…
03 April 2003MAYFAIR’s smart antiques market, Grays, is close enough to Bond Street to attract its fair share of fashionistas, but now it has become a couture centre itself with the opening last week of the luxuriously appointed Vintage Modes.
Pimlico Road dealers fight off rent hike of 120 per cent in two years
01 April 2003THE stock market may be going down and tourists numbers dropping thanks to foreign conflict, but in Pimlico Road, antiques dealers are facing the biggest threat from their second huge rent hike in just over two years.
Decorative fair is very much on, say organisers
01 April 2003RUMOURS that the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair, scheduled for April 8-13 in Battersea Park, London has been cancelled are completely untrue, say the organisers.
Sitting pretty at Claridge’s
28 March 2003ENERGETIC Essex organiser Robert Bailey is never more relaxed than at his London flagship fixture, the Claridge’s Antiques and Fine Art Fair which will be staged at the exclusive Mayfair hotel for the ninth time from April 2 to 6.
Beato’s India and more on that old Siege of Lucknow
26 March 2003The vessel in the foreground of the photograph reproduced right, which at first glance appears to have been deliberately rolled over onto its side, or careened, but which may of course be a special craft, looks uncannily like a vast stranded fish. It is seen here in one of 129 albumen prints of photographs by Felice Beato that sold at £26,000 to Shapero in a Bonhams sale of March 11.
Textile bias
26 March 2003For the rest of this month and until April 11, New Bond Street’s Fine Art Society is awash with large brightly-coloured graphically-designed panels of furnishing fabric, printed headsquares, colourful dresses and even a swimsuit for their latest selling exhibition.
Linley lights on Art Deco
26 March 2003PIMLICO-based furniture designer David Linley pays homage to Art Deco with his latest furniture launch, the Salon Collection, comprising a console table, side table, coffee table, cabinet, sofa and mirror, all currently available from Linley, 60 Pimlico Road, London SW1.
Smash and grabbed!
26 March 2003You’ve heard of a pain in the arse? Well here’s an arse in the pane! This would-be burglar was caught in the act as he tried to break into the London offices of coin dealers and auctioneers A.H. Baldwin.
Collect call
26 March 2003COLLECT is the simple name of a new annual event to be launched at the V&A in London in February next year. The Crafts Council say it will be the premier showcase for unique and limited edition contemporary objects.
Still a winner 60 years on, now at £45,000
20 March 2003The Europa saleroom at Christie’s South Kensington (17.5/10% buyer’s premium) was packed to capacity for their film poster sale on March 4. It was standing room only for the international mix of collectors and dealers who had turned out to secure one of the 280 lots of posters promoting the attractions of various Westerns, horror and science fiction, James Bond, film noir and other vintage and not-so-vintage movies from around the world.
Posset power
20 March 2003Top price in the latest round of ceramics sales in London was the £22,000 paid at Christie’s King Street rooms on February 24 for this 9in (23cm) wide mid-17th century delft posset pot.
Putting the spotlight on Shropshire’s debt to Sandby
20 March 2003Caughley Porcelain has been on the up recently, gaining in followers and in value. Enthusiasts for this Shropshire factory will doubtless want to make their way to Stockspring Antiques next month for what looks to be an interesting loan exhibition under the title Paul Sandby and Caughley Porcelain.
Hoping to make a mint in London now
19 March 2003THIS may not be an obvious time for expansion but for Isle of Wight-based Kendall’s Fine Art business has never been better, and to prove it they are opening two mainland outlets this year.
Bid to clear blocked streets of Portobello
17 March 2003Association vow to fight new licensing move: Portobello market is facing its own congestion issue as dealers report that the local council have threatened to confiscate stock from traders whose pitches illegally block the pavement or road.
Bermondsey downsizes ‘to look busier’
10 March 2003Bermondsey Market, a London institution since the 1950s, is to change its current format, downsizing from three to two separate trading areas next month. The move, part of a Southwark Council bid to revitalise the area, is in part a reaction to the decline in the size of the market.
Regeneration for Camden Lock
05 March 2003Pictured right is a computer-generated image of the proposed redevelopment site at Camden Lock in north London. The project, scheduled for completion in October 2004, will include entertainment and leisure facilities, restaurants, bars, shops and offices.
It’s all there in blue and white at Spero show…
05 March 2003KENSINGTON-based English porcelain specialist Simon Spero is known internationally for the selling exhibitions at his gallery at 109 Kensington Church Street, London W8, and this month he holds one with a guaranteed appeal.
With regards to Rodin
05 March 2003ST JAMES’S sculpture dealer Robert Bowman will be on duty at Maastricht again this year, and at the top fair he will be showing the top names of 19th and 20th century bronzes, such as Rodin and Degas.
Hoping to fill gap in market
05 March 2003NICE to see some new young blood entering the fairs scene, but although she is just 32, London-based French dealer – soon to be organiser – Laurence Paul already has a lifetime’s experience in the antiques business.
It could only happen in the movies
03 March 2003Film poster vendor adds to exclusivity of sale by destroying second copy: COLLECTORS have reacted with outrage and disbelief to a statement from the vendors of an apparently unique film poster that a second copy had been deliberately destroyed to protect the sale’s exclusivity.
